Georges Rouault, BAPTISM OF CHRIST (MISERERE, PLATE 30) (1924, 1948)
Aquatint by the famed Catholic modern artist Georges Rouault (France, 1871 – 1958). This is plate 30 of his classic Miserere series and bears the title Nous…C’est En Sa Mort Que Nous Avons Eté Baptises…(We…It Is Into His Death That We Have Been Baptized) Rouault worked and reworked a set of etchings in the 1910s and 1920s that addressed themes of human suffering and Christian redemption. A series of prints were executed by 1927 and were to be published by Ambroise Vollard, but Vollard never accomplished the task. After Vollard’s death, Rouault gained legal title to the prints and had them published in 1948 as a limited edition series of 450 numbers for each of 58 plates.
