Georges Rouault, VERONIQUE (MISERERE PLATE 33) (1922, 1948)
Georges Rouault, VERONIQUE (MISERERE PLATE 33) (1922, 1948)
Etching by the famed Catholic modern artist Georges Rouault (France, 1871 – 1958). This is plate 33 of his classic Miserere series and bears the title Et Véronique au Tendre Lin, Passe Encore Sur le Chemin… (And Veronica is Still Among Us with Her Veil of Compassion). Rouault worked and reworked a set of etchings in the 1910s and 1920s that addressed themes of human suffering and Christian redemption. A series of prints were executed and were to be published by Ambroise Vallard, but Vallard never accomplished the task. After Vallard’s death, Rouault gained legal title to the prints and had them published in 1948 as a limited edition series of 450 sets.
This print is marked “XXXIII” to the lower right under the mat and the Ambroise Vollard watermark appears to the right edge of the paper. The print is signed “1922 G R” in the plate.
