Jan (Johannes) Luyken, ZACCHEUS IN THE SYCAMORE TREE (C. 1729)
Early eighteenth-century etching by Dutch engraver Jan (Johannes) Luyken (1649-1712). The etching depicts the Biblical scene in which Zaccheus climbs a sycamore tree to get a better view of Jesus (Luke 19:4). The etching is plate 47 from a book published after 1721, when Cornelius Mortier (1699-1783) succeeded his father as publisher with new partner Johannes Covens (1697-1744). The original work is possibly Afbeeldingen der merkwaardigste geschiedenissen van het oude en nieuve testament (Amsterdam, 1729) (Images of th most remarkable histories of the Old and New Testament ).
