This beautiful piece by Czech artist Josef Mathauser (1846 – 1917) places the Madonna and the Child Jesus in a nineteenth-century setting. A family offers gifts as the Three Kings did. The scene is sentimental but not excessively so; it reveals a peace and happiness too deep to waste on sentimentality.
