Joseph Holmes, THE ELEGANT MUD (ESCALANTE, UTAH) (1979)
Joseph Holmes, THE ELEGANT MUD (ESCALANTE, UTAH) (1979)
Rich photograph of the muddy bank of Utah's Escalante River by innovative photographer Joseph Holmes. Water is pooled between the noble undulations of mud along the riverfront. This is a gorgeous and unforgettable image, aptly titled by the photographer himself and listed as an "artist's favorite" on his official website.
The pictures posted here contain a good deal of glare--particularly the last two, which show how the image changes to a lighter tone when more light is cast on it. A glare-free version of the image can be viewed at the photographer's website. I would strongly recommend non-glare museum glass (TruVu) for this photograph once it is shipped. The photo deserves the best display and the best preservation available.
The photograph is matted, signed, and framed. The date of 1979 is the date the photograph was taken. It is not known when this particular print was made. Mr. Holmes produces his prints one-at-a-time and so we know that great care has gone into the making of this one. By reference to another print of this image it appears the edition size was to be capped at 400. As late as 1982, however, fewer than 20 prints had been made, and Mr. Holmes notes that the numbers he actually prints typically fall well short of the standard run of a limited edition artwork. "In fact," he writes, "I don't have the time to make very many prints each year, so my prints are all quite 'limited' with respect to their numbers, more so than I would want. You will be hard-pressed to find any photographer who puts more effort into the making of one print than I do, and after nearly a half century of studying this, my skill's not bad either." I heartily concur.
This image in this size currently sells at Holmes's website for $870 including the frame.
