Steph Roberts, WITH ABANDON (2006)

$1,250.00

Dramatic oil painting on wood panel by Chicago artist Steph Roberts. Signed, titled, and dated on the verso.

Roberts has done a series of paintings of divers that express a tension between human freedom and destiny. The flawless technique of the diver contrasts with the reality of an uncontrollable fall. In this particular piece, there are certainly echoes of a crucifixion as well. It is as though the diver is giving up his very self in the most perfect way he can. The splash of color in the background and the faintly inscribed depth numbers and hashmarks at left indicate that the diver is already underwater. His work is done—and, we trust, rewarded.

Panel dimensions 28.0" x 38.0" x 1.25"
