An enchanting piece by the great Texas modernist Michael Frary. The floating vessel carries a woman in white and a man in black who appear to be a wedding couple. What is the “journey” of the title? The journey of life? The journey of marriage and family? In either case, they sail on foreboding waters. The piece conveys a sense of both beauty and danger.

The number 2000 appears on the verso but I am not confident that this represents the date of the painting. The verso shows a date of May 31 followed by what may be a stricken out “ ‘67”. The painting resembles Frary’s “Mystic Place” of 1957 (see auction record of this piece on liveauctioneers.com) and its style fits with Frary’s mid-20th century output.
