Carl Hoppe, A CREEK IN LEON VALLEY

$1,400.00

Oil on canvas. Image 22” x 36”. Good condition. Signed “C. Hoppe”.

Handwritten tag on back appears to read “A Creek Burn(?) Dr Leon Valley”. Leon Valley is a small incorporated city in the northwestern part of the San Antonio metropolitan area.

The frame is believed to be a replacement of the original frame.

________________

This painting depicts a shallow creek flowing through a South Texas countryside. Hoppe composed the piece long before Leon Valley became the urbanized community that it is today. And yet much of the area still looks today like it did when Hoppe painted a half-century ago. Of special note is Hoppe's lovely sky, which is a calm blue behind the clouds--bluer and calmer, in fact, than these photographs show.

This painting, which is larger than most of the Hoppe pieces that have sold at auction, is a representative work from one of South Texas's finest mid-century landscape artists.
